Time With God is Everything

by Lane Jordan

Be still and know I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth! The Lord of hosts is with us; The God of Jacob is our refuge. Psalm 46:10-11 KJV

When I made the life-altering decision to follow Jesus, I embarked on a journey of studying the Bible, praying, and engaging in fellowship with other believers. These are not just practical ways but transformative steps towards growing in the Lord.

Another part of walking with the Lord I heard repeatedly was to be still so that you could hear God. We must stop, be still, and listen to what God has to say.

But wow, is that hard to do in our busy lives! I would try it at times, but it never became a daily habit for me until now.

A friend shared a book with me – 4 Minutes to Hear God’s Voice by Me Ra Koh. The author and her family began this habit almost thirty years ago, and the practice transformed their life and their walk with God.

This book illuminates the transformative power of actively listening to God’s voice. It’s not a magic formula, but a simple yet profound way to pause our activities and thoughts and tune in to God. The author suggests setting a timer for 4 minutes—you can adjust the duration to your preference. But the act of setting the timer itself can open a gateway for you to start hearing God’s voice, potentially transforming your spiritual journey.

God doesn’t talk to us in thunder and lightening but in a whisper:

Then He said, “Go out, and stand on the mountain before the Lord.” And behold, the Lord passed by, and a great and strong wind tore into the mountains and broke the rocks in pieces before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind; and after the wind an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake; and after the earthquake a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire; and after the fire a still small voice (I Kings 19: 11-12 NKJV).

Just as God talked to Elijah in a still, small voice, He can talk to you and me. We just have to make the time to stop, be quiet, and listen.

I pray you begin this transforming step in your life, for I know what a difference it has made in mine.

  1. Lane, this is such a great reminder and a helpful starting point for those who have not yet made a commitment to spend time alone with God. Thanks for sharing! Fran
