When You Need a Good Night’s Sleep

In peace I will lie down and sleep, for you alone, Lord, make me dwell in safety. Psalm 4:8 NIV

I rolled over, repositioned my pillow and tried to will sleep to come. But my mind was my enemy. The thoughts crowding my brain circled like vultures, diving with sharp claws and ripping away the fabric of sleep. The worst thing was that I couldn’t pinpoint the exact source of my insomnia. There were lots of reasons for me to be stressed, but no single one appeared to be the ultimate culprit. 

Finally I gave up, grabbed my Bible and settled into the recliner downstairs where my tossing and turning wouldn’t disturb my husband’s rest. I thumbed through the book of Psalms—my go-to place when I’m searching for a cure—and that’s when I found this verse highlighted. 

In the past I’d used it to pray while our son was away on deployment. That night I initially dismissed it as not really relevant to my current situation and continued to skim through Scripture. When those words wouldn’t leave my mind, I turned back. 

Could this passage be more pertinent than I’d first thought? Two words stood out: peace and safety. Peace was definitely something I needed. Safety, however, didn’t seem to fit my struggle. I couldn’t pinpoint any specific fears. I prayed, asking God to share His insight.

What He answered has stayed with me. He pointed out that I really was afraid—of many things. I was worried about not measuring up, not getting everything done, not being able to continue at my current speed of life. As each fear exploded into my mind, it felt like God whispered His provision over it. As He spoke, that particular worry vanished. I went through the entire list and when my mind was quiet, I found myself ready for sleep.

I learned that when I let my fears take up residence in my mind, they grow and multiply, pushing out the peace of God

Giving God My Anxiety

There was much on my mind and I couldn’t sleep. My mind was racing through all that had happened that day, all that I needed to do the next day, and all the possibilities of what might happen if I couldn’t get it all done.

I got out of bed, grabbed my Bible off of my nightstand, and went into the other room, where I turned on the light, so I wouldn’t disturb my sleeping husband.

I turned to the Psalms because I remembered they were songs of human emotions written by songwriters who felt many of the same things I do. Did they ever worry? Did they experience sleepless nights? Did they understand worry and even bouts of anxiety?

As I searched through the songs in Scripture that night, I learned that those songwriters indeed experienced anxiety and worries. But instead of lying awake at night, trying to work through their concerns, they recounted Who God is and applied it to their situations. I learned from them that:

  • “The Lord is my light and my salvation” and the “stronghold of my life.” Therefore, whom or what should I fear? (Psalm 27:1 CSB).
  • “The angel of the Lord encamps around those who fear him, and rescues them” (Psalm 34:7 CSB), so I can sleep, knowing I’m in His protection.
  • As I “take delight in the Lord,” He will give me my heart’s desires. As I commit my way to Him and trust in Him, He will act (Psalm 37:4-5 CSB).
  • Although there are uncertainties in this world and everything is constantly changing, He is my “rock of refuge…where I can always go” (Psalm 71:3 CSB).
  • I can rest and trust that the Lord will accomplish what concerns me (Psalm 138:8 CSB).
  • In vain I rise up early and stay up late, working hard to have enough food and work everything out because He gives such things to His beloved in their sleep (Psalm 127:1-2 CSB).

With those comforting truths, I was able to return to bed and sleep soundly, knowing my Heavenly Father is the One who “gives sleep to the one he loves” (Psalm 127:2 CSB). God already knows what’s on my mind, but as I give it to Him each night before laying my head on my pillow, I can be certain His peace will not only guard my heart and mind, it will help me sleep better, too.

What tends to keep you awake at night? Is it something God can take care of? Give it to Him daily so you aren’t carrying the burden yourself. Psalm 4:8 CSB assures us: “I will both lie down and sleep in peace, for you alone, Lord, make me live in safety.”

Time for a Nap

I seldom ever take a nap during the day. It’s not that I’m opposed to naps, but I’m one of those perpetually fast-forward personalities that has a hard time slowing down long enough during the day to take one. But the other day, my late nights and early mornings caught up to me. I was so sleepy and sluggish; I couldn’t concentrate on anything and needed a power nap.

Setting the timer on my phone for 45 minutes, I curled up on my bed and started to drift off to sleep, but the room was so cold, I couldn’t relax. My husband keeps the thermostat set at “frigid” in our house. Remembering the quilt folded at the foot of the bed, I pulled it over myself. With the heavy warmth of that quilt wrapped around me, I instantly fell into a deep, restful sleep.

It feels good to have a fresh start; and grabbing a little rest is needed. When my timer went off, I woke up refreshed and ready to tackle the rest of the day.

We normally just think about rest in terms of our physical bodies, like when I ran out of steam in the middle of that day. But rest is essential for our soul and spirit as well. We tend to forget about our need for spiritual and emotional rest. It’s easy to become weary and worn out when our lives are filled with concerns and worries for our family or marriage, work issues, finances, health, or even ministry.

Hey, let’s face it, we live in a cold world, and as much as I needed the warm quilt to relax and rest in a cold room, we need a covering over our minds and hearts to relax and rest in the Lord. That’s where we find peace for our weariness.

God has provided a covering for us that is even better than my warm quilt. Look what it says in Psalm 91:4 NLT: “He will cover you with his feathers. He will shelter you with his wings. His faithful promises are your armor and protection.” When our minds are filled with a million thoughts, when we are stressed out, when life seems out of control and when things aren’t going the way we want them to, it’s time to step away and rest under the soft downy feathers of God’s faithful promises.

Our situation may not change right away, but His peace that comes with His covering, allows us to relax and rest. After a time of refreshment with Him, we’ll have what we need to get on with the situation at hand.

  • Psalm 18:30 (BSB) “As for God, His way is perfect; the word of the Lord is flawless. He is a shield to all who take refuge in Him.”
  • Isaiah 51:16 (BSB) “I have put My words in your mouth, and covered you in the shadow of My hand, to establish the heavens, to found the earth, and to say to Zion, ‘You are My people.’”
  • John 14:27 (NLT) “I am leaving you with a gift—peace of mind and heart. And the peace I give is a gift the world cannot give. So, don’t be troubled or afraid.”

May you wrap yourself in God’s peace and be able to rest in Him today.
