But Moses told the people, “Don’t be afraid. Just stand still and watch the Lord rescue you today. The Egyptians you see today will never be seen again. The Lord himself will fight for you. Just stay calm.” Exodus 14:13-14 NLT
At times we may have that kind of Red Sea moment, feeling trapped with no way out. The Israelites were cornered at the Red Sea with the Egyptian army advancing to kill them, yet Moses encouraged them to have faith. God then commanded Moses to lift his staff over the sea, which then parted, and the Israelites walked safely to the other side. Once they had crossed, the Red Sea collapsed on their enemies, killing them all.
David also had a Red Sea moment, when he and his men returned home from battle to see that their enemy had burned down their village and carried off their wives, sons, and daughters. They cried out and wept until they had no more strength to weep. And David was greatly distressed, for the people spoke of stoning him, because all the people were bitter in soul, each for his sons and daughters. But David strengthened himself in the Lord his God (1 Samuel 30:6 NLT). He turned to God in prayer. And David inquired of the Lord, “Shall I pursue after this band? Shall I overtake them?” He answered him, “Pursue, for you shall surely overtake and shall surely rescue”(1 Samuel 30:8 NLT)
David then set out with hundreds of men to pursue and overtake the enemy. Along the way, they encountered an Egyptian, an abandoned servant of the enemy. Once they gave him food and water and promised not to kill him, the Egyptian led them to the enemy camp, where they conquered their foes and recovered all the wives, sons, and daughters, and captured all their flocks and herds. By turning to God and trusting Him when they felt weak in their own strength, they not only recovered what had been stolen but reaped the spoils of the enemy. They came out better than before.
We live in challenging times when Red Sea moments come at us from all angles. It is then that we must strengthen ourselves in the Lord, knowing that He Himself will fight for us. When my daughter and I were recently called to leave our jobs in Denver to return to California after five years, it was a Red Sea moment. Finances and resources were tight, and anxiety tried to overwhelm me. Just when I thought the fear couldn’t get worse, I received a cancer diagnosis. Things looked so impossible that I knew I couldn’t do this in my own strength. Each morning and evening I sought refuge in my prayer mountain overlooking San Francisco Bay as I had for more than 30 years as a single mother. I strengthened myself by recalling the many times God had answered my prayers and now again, turned it all over to Him. Yes, ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it! (John 14:14 NLT).
For many days now I have spent hours in prayer for those with significant needs. After each session, I would sit on a rock that overlooks a beautiful prosperous waterfront community and find myself longing to live on the water, too. While it looked so out of reach for me to ever attain this, I often found myself whispering, “And if it’s not too much trouble God, because these other things are more important, somehow someday I would love to live on the bay too.”
One day God guided to look at rentals. In one month, I will be renting the top floor suite of a beautiful waterfront home with a private dock, two doors down from one of my best friends. I am now staying in her private guest cottage on the bay as I go through surgery and recovery while I wait for the rental to be ready. As I type this devotional by a cozy fire in a comfy bed watching the sunrise over the bay, I am astounded at the greatness of God.
When we step back and let Him make a way, be prepared to be amazed. He is a good Father. Nothing is impossible for Him, and He can do far greater than we could ever ask.
Now all glory to God, who is able, through his mighty power at work within us, to accomplish infinitely more than we might ask or think. Ephesians 3:20 NLT
