Ready but Uncertain of the Calling

by Tanya Miller

Then God called out, “Samuel, Samuel!” Samuel answered, “Yes? I’m here.” Then he ran to Eli saying, “I heard you call. Here I am.”

Eli said, “I didn’t call you. Go back to bed.” And so he did.

God called again, “Samuel, Samuel!”

Samuel got up and went to Eli, “I heard you call. Here I am….

God called again, “Samuel!”—the third time! Yet again Samuel got up and went to Eli, “Yes? I heard you call me. Here I am.”

That’s when it dawned on Eli that God was calling the boy. So Eli directed Samuel, “Go back and lie down. If the voice calls again, say, ‘Speak, God. I’m your servant, ready to listen.’” Samuel returned to his bed.  1 Samuel 3:4-6,8-9 MSG

Here I am.

Have you ever been working and serving the Lord so mightily, that you did not realize that God had been speaking to you? What about a time when you prayed for an answer, and when God delivered on His promises, you failed to recognize it? How about a time when God spoke clearly to you to press on a little higher for His Kingdom’s sake? Did you hear him then?

Perhaps you were uncertain, like Samuel when God was calling him. It took the young man three times before Samuel realized it was God, not Eli, speaking.

Just as Samuel was busily working in the temple, so are we today. It could be working with the youth as a teen tutor, or on the hospitality committee as a greeter, or serving in some other capacity. We get so busy serving that we can miss God speaking to us in a small, still voice. Yet we must be hearers of the Word (James 1:22) so that we can continue being doers.

God is everywhere, and He uses any opportunity He sees fit to minister to us, build us up, and use us. When we miss God speaking, we miss out on these times. But if we make time for God in the midst of our service, we will be ready to hear Him when he speaks. And when he does, we will be certain of it.

Stay in the Word and prayerful throughout your day. He may be calling soon!
