Gear Guide to Life: Essentials for the Journey

by Jackie M. Johnson

All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.” 2 Timothy 3:16 NIV

Hiking is a popular activity where I live in Colorado. Most outdoor enthusiasts know the importance of being prepared with the right gear—whether it’s a day hike or a trek in the backcountry—to prevent injuries and survive the climb.

Likewise, Christ-followers need the right “gear” to be well-equipped for the daily ups and downs on the journey of life. Thankfully, we have a helpful guidebook: the Bible, our “Gear Guide to Life.” Our loving Guide has provided everything we need for the journey.

Here are a few ways to become more equipped for a stronger and spiritually healthy life:

Food – We need to feed on God’s Word, the Bible, because our relationship with God is essential for spiritual life. Jesus said, “I am the bread of life…Whoever eats this bread will live forever.” (John 6:48, 51 NIV). He fills our spiritual hunger and meets our every need.

Water – Every time we drink water, we get thirsty again. Jesus is the “living water.” He quenches our spiritual thirst and washes us clean. John 4:10 NIV reads, “Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked him and he would have given you living water.”

Protective clothing – As Christ-followers, we need protection from our unseen enemies. We are reminded in Ephesians 6:14-17 NIV to be clothed with, “…the belt of truth…the breastplate of righteousness…your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace…the shield of faith…the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.” (emphasis mine)

Map –The One who knows the way, Jesus Christ, said, “I am the way.” He leads and guides us in this life—and provides eternal life with God forever. John 14:6 NIV reads, “Jesus answered, ‘I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.’”

Destination – Do you know where you’re going—on a daily basis and at life’s end?

Jesus’ words recorded in John 14: 2-3 NIV, “My Father’s house has many rooms…I am going there to prepare a place for you…I will come back and take you to be with me…”

When you are equipped for life’s twists and turns—and have God as your Guide—you will surely reach your final destination and find hope and joy along the way.

Lord, please prepare and equip me for each new day. Give me vision and strength to walk this winding road of life confidently and courageously. Equip me with the wisdom, power and love I need for this challenging and messy life.  As I look to your Word, show me your best for every situation. For Your Glory. Amen.
